Thrifting is always almost associated with something old, whether it be a piece of cloth or a decor. Most people think of thrifted clothes as only being Vintage, but the reality is that although 70% of them are vintage, you can style them in a contemporary/modern way.

On today’s blog post, I will be sharing tips in how to style your thrifted or vintage pieces in a modern way.

If you follow along in my blog articles, you know I have shared tips on how to thrift like pro, and with those tips being applied to what you determine as your personal style, you can make any thrifted item look contemporary. First, go for items like a denim skirt or trouser because even though they are vintage, denim is always in style and a skirt like mine, is actually back in trend which makes it easy to incorporate into any contemporary wardrobe.

One of my best thrifting advice is never go in with a “particular” item in mind but go in with the “idea of a particular” item in mind or never have anything in mind and just go looking and most times, those are the best times I find the best items. I wanted to create the pink oversized shirt vibe that caught my eyes while scrolling through Pinterest, and I stumbled on this incredible 100% Linen Shirt in Large, which was perfect for the oversized style I was going for. If you know, oversized anything is trending right now, which you can easily incorporate into your wardrobe and make look contemporary.

Another way to make your thrifted clothes look modern, is to upcycle them. Make changes, cut, add, tear, loosen, split etc do whatever you think is creative to you, and what fits your personal style. Bring a new life to those pieces by twisting the original look to fit into a more contemporary item, which makes them stand out like a unique piece.

I styled this oversized shirt in a modern way by rolling up the sleeves, tucking into my high waisted denim skirt, creating a cinching around my waist while highlighting the front button slit. Very contemporary and who will think both items are thrifted and the denim skirt being Vintage. Added a mini bag and a pair of tortoise shell heels. Mini bags are trending right now and its a good way to slip in one into your thrifted/vintage look to make it look modern. Accessorize with contemporary jewelries, makeup, sunglasses etc. tying every modern item into your thrifted makes your overall outfit, look new and fresh.
