First Steps To Building A Skincare Routine; Skincare Products & Tips.

How to build a skincare routine for beginners

Not everyone has a skincare routine. Some do but are not consistent and whichever category you fall under, I will not be judgmental as I was once in that boat and somedays I still find myself sailing that boat today.

One of the most asked questions on my Instagram is what product to use, how often to use it, recommend a good product, what are the best steps etc. I will be answering these questions on this blog post.

It’s never a hard rule, neither is it difficult to start a routine. It doesn’t matter what skincare brand you choose to go with, the key thing is being consistent with your routine. I also don’t believe expensive means better results and what works for “A” may not work for you.

First steps to building a skincare collection

The first step to building your skincare routine is knowing your skin type/needs. Do you have dry, oily or combination skin? Do you suffer from hyperpigmentation, large pores, acne prone or discoloration?. Once you have determined what skin type you fall under, it makes it easy to pull products that suit and serve your skin needs.

I am typically dry skin so I gravitate towards skincare products that will hydrate my skin and keep it healthy and supple all day long.

The skincare products you need:

Cleanser: A cleanser is the first product you need to build your skincare collection. It doesn’t matter what brand you choose. However, there are a ton of options out there whether organic, chemically processed, gentle, vegan etc. I currently use the Dermalogica Pre cleanse set and it’s incredible. I can feel my face super clean and polished. Having a cleanser isn’t the only step, but cleansing twice daily as part of your skincare routine is key, whether you had makeup on or not.

Toner/Essence: A toner and or essence is the next product/step you need immediately after cleansing. I usually go with one that contains Vitamin C or Niacinamide as their key ingredient as those help with hyperpigmentation. A toner helps with removing excess oil and dirt on your skin after cleansing and it also helps with tightening your pores.

I currently use the Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner and sometimes, the Pixi Vitamin C Brightening Toner. An Essence helps balance your skin PH level and prepares it for your other skincare products. I use the Hydro Bio Essence Lotion and it works great for keeping my skin really soft and smooth.

What you need to start a good skincare routine

serums and moisturizers.

How to have the best skincare routine

Serum: This is where the skincare collection gets interesting. A good serum is applied immediately after your toner/essence and it helps boost collagen in your skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is a must skincare product even if you skip having an Essence. I currently use the Honest Beauty Stay Hydrated Hyaluronic Acid + NMF Serum.

Eye Cream: This is the least thought of when building a skincare collection. People including myself, talk more about the listed products above, but less about an eye cream. You need an eye cream because they are delicate and sensitive and specific products help attack under eye bags, dark circles and wrinkles. I currently use the Honest Beauty Calm and Renew Eye Balm and Dr.Brandt triple Antioxidant Eye cream.

Moisturizer: Definitely a must have in building your skincare collection. Never use your body lotion on your face. They have different purposes that’s why a body lotion is for the body and a face moisturizer is strictly for the face. Your face is more sensitive than your entire body so it needs a moisturizer to prevent dryness, protect and rejuvenate.

Skincare products for beginners

Lip Scrub and Balm: We don’t want a chapped cracked lips so we need to have numerous lip balms. Ones that contain Vitamin E, C and Hyaluronic Acid.

Sunscreen: A sunscreen is a in your skincare routine and it doesn’t matter whether you a light or dark skinned. You need to protect your skin from the UV Rays which causes skin discoloration, age spots, wrinkles and signs of aging. I currently use the Supergoop Unseen sunscreen but it’s not an absolute favorite of mine. Also Neutrogena hydro boost sunscreen.
