I have dry to extra dry skin. Before I delve into that aspect, I experienced intense hyperpigmentation and discoloration. My dad would say, “why do you have that black patch on the sides of your face?”. At the time, I didn’t know what it was. However, in 2020, I began researching and taking my skincare needs seriously, and not just the basic cleansers and moisturizers.

Vitamin C is your no.1 pick when it comes to tackling hyperpigmentation. You can choose them in any form, and these have been my go to recently. I don’t use all at the same time, but these are the products that help with keeping my hyperpigmentation away, evens my skin tone and keeps my skin clear. Whether you have one of these or any other Vitamin C infused products, you should be good.

Next is applying sunscreen daily. This step protects my skin tremendously and never underestimate the transformation SPF can do to your skin. Disregard the narrative that darker skin people do not need sunscreen. Please wear your sunscreen DAILY. Niacinamide and Retinol are incredible when it comes to fighting hyperpigmentation. and brightening the skin.

Retinols are considered good hyperpigmentation treatments. It is a higher potency form of Vitamin C, which helps with wrinkles and anti aging factors. Be warned that retinol exposes your skin to high sun sensitivity, so it is advisable to use it only at night. However, Backuchiol is a natural alternative to retinol which is safer to apply during daytime and it also helps combat hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.

With dry to extra dry skin, hydration is key. Moisturizing with products that contain Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides and squalane, would do your skin justice. It will not only bring hydration to your skin, but it will draw and lock in moisture. Brands like Youth To The People, Naturism, Cocokind, Versed, Pacifica, are affordable brands that keep your skin hydrated.

During the winter months, it is important that you layer your body products as well as your moisturizers and serums because the drier the air, the more susceptible your skin is to loose moisture.
