I realized people are wanting to know more about the steps on starting a blog, as opposed to only seeing beautiful pictures on my Instagram and other social platforms. So I decided to share more information about blogging and how to get started.
On today’s blog post, I will be sharing few tips on what you need to know or do before starting a blog.
Starting or owning a blog is easy and you can get one rolling by yourself without any expert involved. First, you must choose a hosting site you would want your blog to operate from, and there are different options out there from WordPress (which is what I use), Wix, Square space, Blogger, Blue host, etc. These sites help you run a site as they host your blog and every other aspect of it. I started mine about 4 years ago just sitting on my couch, where I signed up with WordPress and since then, I have been using them consistently while changing things occasionally with the help of their onsite engineers who assist anytime I face some technical difficulties.
The second tip to starting a blog is, you must have a domain name you intend to use. A domain name is the address/identification of your website, which has authority and control within the internet. You do a domain name search to make sure no other individual owns and uses the exact name. When your search and name reservation is done, then you go ahead to register the domain name. Eg, my domain name is SIMPLYSTYLEBYJ.COM and once that is completed, you can start off writing and publishing your blog post.
As a beginner, the appearance of your blog should not be your priority, as there are tons of inbuilt themes your hosting site will have you choose from. I advise you make your Header and Menu button easily accessible as those are the first point of contact for any reader or visitor. Be sure to add a little information in your “About” page as that helps visitors know what who and what your blog is about. As time goes on, you can adjust and tweak the appearance of your blog.
Another tip to consider as a new blogger is having a niche to write on and how often you plan on publishing on your blog. No pressure at first but you must have at least 5 topics to publish before you launch your site. You don’t have to publish them all at once, but that gives you a head start as to the direction of your blog.
Lastly, you don’t need to be tech savvy to own a blog. I have a background in Law and not IT, so I had basic technical skills which I began to develop when I launched my blog, and I still don’t consider myself tech savvy as the IT world keeps evolving. There are so many aspects to blogging but these are the first steps you need to know right before you start a blog.
