Difference Between Hydrated Skin and Moisturized Skin.

steps in hydrating your skin

I always thought a moisturized skin is a hydrated skin until I began to grasp more knowledge about skincare products. While that had been my belief, most skincare brands use these words that they now become synonymous to many.

However, these words have a clear difference and knowing them, makes it easier for you especially when making product choices.

It is important to note that all skin types can suffer from dehydration. It doesn’t matter if you have oily, dry or combination skin. The belief has always been that only people with dry skin have dehydrated skin, which is what I always thought. Skin contains 64% water which requires an adequate amount of H2O to function effectively. If the right amount of water is lacking, you begin to have fine lines, elasticity loss and aging.

Hydrating and Moisturizing are essential steps in a skincare routine that tackle different aspects of the skin. The cells of a hydrated skin, looks plump, bouncy and fine lines/pores are minimized. Serums which contain hyaluronic acids are the perfect products that hydrates the skin. It is important to hydrate your skin regardless of your skin type because a skin which lacks hydrating factors become dehydrated.

On the other hand, a hydrated skin which isn’t moisturized, lacks the tendency of retaining its moisture and it is at risk of loosing its elasticity. Therefore, it is important to do both and not one or the other as they both work hand in hand to repair the skin’s moisture barrier.

A moisturized skin locks in hydration. It seals the water on your skin and prevents it from evaporating, which in turn protects your skin barrier. Hydrating your skin without moisturizing it, becomes a waste of your hydrators and skipping this step, doesn’t fix your skin issues.

The first step to repairing your skin barrier is by introducing hydrating products into your skincare routine. Avoid using products that strip away your natural oils as that tends to make water evaporate from your skin. Look out for products with Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, Squalane etc. To moisturize ie to protect your skin, use products with ceramides and peptides.
